In 1913, Columbus Pierson Cosby (top left) began mining sand off the banks of the Alabama River with a couple of work mules and a trusted buggy under the name Southern Sand and Gravel. By the 1930s, Mr. Cosby had over 60 head of mule and his own river steamboat named The Tombigbee. In 1946, his son-in-law, Harry Kendrick Carmichael, combined the sand and gravel operation with the concrete business (bottom left). For over 100 years this successful family enterprise has been providing outstanding service and quality products to the Selma/Dallas County area.
